We’re lucky to live in this beautiful place and enjoy sharing it with our visitors.

Why is Waikiki Famous?

Why is Waikiki Famous?

Waikiki’s spectacular beauty, surfing, and numerous well-known visitors have made it world-famous.

Native Hawaiian and Olympic gold medalist Duke Kahanamoku helped popularize surfing and aloha worldwide, honing his skills here in the 1890s.

Author Robert Louis Stevenson arrived in 1893 just as the tourism boom began, and it wasn’t long before stars like Shirley Temple, Groucho Marx, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, and Elvis Presley followed.

Today, some four million visitors arrive every year to enjoy Waikiki Beach, magnificent views of Diamond Head, rich culture, and delicious Hawaiian cuisine.

The Beaches

The crown jewel of Waikiki is Waikiki Beach.

Made up of eight different beaches spanning a two-mile stretch, it offers access to a wide range of activities.

Surfing lessons are a must, but snorkeling, diving, catamaran cruises, and canoe rides are also popular.

You can also try kayaking, paddleboarding, or parasailing.

When it’s time to relax, beachfront venues await with cocktails, live music, and vibrant nightlife.

Waikiki Aquarium

Set along the waterfront, the Waikiki Aquarium is a great spot to discover marine life.

It’s home to 500 species and over 3,500 individual creatures, including Hawaiian monk seals.

You’ll also find a touch pool, a living reef with coral, and over 100 kinds of tropical fish.

Diamond Head

An iconic volcano on the eastern edge of Waikiki, Diamond Head offers a popular hiking trail.

Reservations are required via the Go Hawaii State Parks website.

The 1.6-mile round-trip hike takes 1–2 hours and includes a steep climb with over 90 steps to the top.

The reward? Sweeping views of Waikiki, the Pacific Ocean, and Diamond Head Lighthouse.

Honolulu Zoo

Between Waikiki and Diamond Head, the Honolulu Zoo features over 300 animals across 42.5 acres.

You’ll see mammals, birds, and reptiles from three tropical zones: African Savannah, Pacific Islands, and Asian/American forests.

Look for native species like the nene goose and pueo owl, as well as endangered animals like the Sumatran tiger and black rhino.

Iolani Palace

Built in 1882, Iolani Palace was once home to Hawaii’s royal family.

Now a museum, you can tour the throne room, royal quarters, and historical exhibits in the basement.

International Market Place

This open-air shopping spot features 90+ stores, Hawaiian landscaping, and an iconic banyan tree.

Enjoy shopping, local arts, hula shows, and dining under the stars.
